This is a service that helps you find the perfect rug for your home when a standard size or colourway won’t work. You may want a rug that works around specific furniture, a different colour or design tweak, or a larger size. Whatever the reason, our pain-free custom process will help you find a happy solution.
Talented artisan team
‘Because we work with small workshops and talented artisans in India and Nepal, we are not tied to mass-market targets and production schedules,’ Wendy explains. ‘We have the time, flexibility and ability to customise beautiful, individual hand-crafted rugs.
‘It is possible to create a custom-sized rug from all our hand-tufted and hand-knotted designs, however, our designs can’t be downsized,’ Wendy explains, ‘there is simply too much intricate detail involved, and making them smaller would lose that detail and compromise the balance.’
One popular design for a custom order is Jardin de Orient, a striking rug with a chinoiserie-style border featuring gold leaves and branches, which both frame and support exotic, colourful birds and butterflies.
New Jardin de Orient colourway
Available in green and gold, and pink and gold, colourways, we have just introduced a wonderful neutral ecru base for this design. Jardin de Orient in ecru will be available in our standard sizes, but, with her new grounding, neutral backdrop, we think she might become even more popular as a custom rug choice.
‘Neutral rugs work particularly well for a custom order,’ Wendy explains. ‘These rugs are a bigger investment and the buyer is looking for longevity, for a rug that will make them smile for years to come, which is where the benefit of a versatile neutral comes in.’
The joy of a neutral rug
A neutral rug will ground a space whilst making a style statement at the same time. Neutrals - and we include gold in this - are elegant, timeless, and joyful, bringing lasting glamour to interiors. Things may change, but a well-chosen neutral rug will continue to look stunning and feel beautiful underfoot year after year.
We have worked on several custom orders for Jardin de Orient, many of which required a change to a neutral base colour. Karen Walker chose a custom-made ivory Jardin de Orient hand-tufted rug for her light-filled dining room, and teamed her beautifully with Joie de Vivre wallpaper and curtains.
‘The Custom Service has been excellent,’ Karen explains. ‘One of the things I love about Wendy Morrison designs is that whilst the designs are different, the colour palette ensures the designs can be mixed and matched together.’
Renowned maximalist designer Laurence Llewellin Bowen opted for Jardin de Orient in a custom ivory colourway. The colour of the birds was also changed, to tie in with his own range of fabric and wallpaper.
Laurence’s design journey started with a virtual consultation, as many of our custom rug projects do. We offer a free consultation service to guide and, if required, advise, on what designs might work well for a particular setting or discuss custom options.
Our sample service is hugely helpful when considering a custom design. A customer can purchase a small sample size of the desired rug to judge how well the colour and pattern work in situ.
Custom collaboration across continents
Every piece of the custom puzzle fitted perfectly on a recent project, quite literally on the other side of the world. A custom-colour ecru Jardin de Orient was at the heart of a wonderful dining room project carried out by Aiden T Studio, an award-winning interior design firm in Singapore.

We worked on the design layout of the rug, and with the visuals provided it was easy to tweak on size and even some colours.
